1. The Sewerage Rehabilitation Manual

The WRc Sewerage Rehabilitation Manual was first published in 1984 and since then has gained world-wide recognition as the standard reference work for industry professionals involved in the maintenance and rehabilitation of sewers.

Based on research and development programmes and hands-on experience spanning 20 years the manual incorporates current best practice and latest developments from the UK and around the world.

The SRM is used throughout the UK for day-to-day maintenance and for strategic long-term rehabilitation planning. Aspects of its procedures have been incorporated into UK regulatory procedures and the general principles have formed the basis for the new European Standard EN752-5: Drain and Sewer Systems Outside Buildings: Part 5 Rehabilitation.

This 4th Edition of the SRM is available on CD and in hard copy. The full contents lists and parts of the manual are available on line at www.wrcplc.co.uk/srm.

2. The Civil Engineering Specification for the Water Industry (6th Edition)

This document was first published in July 1978 and is now on its 6th edition. It has become the standard document for civil engineering contracts let by the water companies in England and Wales. For the first time, the fifth edition also reflects the requirements of the Water Industry in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The document is performance based and reflects the existence of other complementary documents, referring to nationally accepted specifications.

Comments on this document can be made at www.wrcplc.co.uk/ceswi.

3. Sewers for Adoption (5th edition), Sewers for Scotland (1st edition), Manx Sewers for Adoption (1st edition)

"Sewers for Adoption" was first issued in 1980. Since then it has become the standard in England and Wales for the design and construction of sewers to adoptable standards. The document is developed jointly between WRc and the Water Companies of England and Wales, in conjunction with the National House Builder's Federation.

Comments on this document can be made at www.wrcplc.co.uk/sfa. These are reviewed at a 6-monthly meeting of the Water Companies and the HBF.

Technically the same as SFA5, but varying in legal detail, Sewers for Scotland and the Manx Sewers for Adoption are now available.

4. Drain Repair Book - Best Practice Manual for the Inspection and Repair of Domestic and Light Industrial Drains

First edition - February 2003

The manual document has been developed at the request of the Drainage Forum, a group of insurance companies that are all members of the Association of British Insurers. Collectively they recognise that there is scope to improve the quality of repairs in the domestic drainage industry, and the effectiveness of all those who work within that industry by identifying and promoting best practice.

The Drain Repair Book covers the repair of 75 mm to 250 mm diameter drains and is split into three sections, offering guidance on the inspection and condition assessment of drains, a specification for the repair of drains and a materials specification for cured-in-place repair systems.

It is intended both as a guide to Drainage Specialists carrying out inspection and repair work, and to assist property owners and the insurance industry in auditing the work.

This Manual does not provide guidance relating to health and safety when undertaking drain inspection and repair work, nor does it purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract.

Like all documents of this type, it is intended to be a ‘living document’. It is only through the adoption and usage of this Best Practice Manual that a significant difference can be made to the future of a historically fragmented industry.

This document is available through WRc's Bookshop: www.WEBookshop.com.

5. The Polyethylene Pipe Systems Manual

WRc first produced the Manual in hardcopy with the plastics pipes manufacturers, polymer resin suppliers and the UK Water Industry in 1986. At that time the use of Medium Density Polyethylene for water supply pipes was a new development. After extensive research by the plastics pipes and water industries, High Performance Polyethylene pipes were introduced in the 1990's and the second edition of the Manual was introduced in 1994 to reflect the changes associated with this new product.

Now in 2002, the Manual has been updated to reflect changes in technology and also the move towards European Standardisation. This manual draws together guidance on the use of PE pipe for the UK water industry. However, much of the guidance is applicable to the use of PE pipe for the conveyance of water by other industries and in locations outside of the UK.

This document is available on line at www.wrcplc.co.uk/PE.

6. The PVC Pipe Systems Manual

The third edition of the manual for PVC Pressure Pipe Systems provides a concise and practical guide to the manufacture, design, installation and operation of plastic pipelines, constructed of pipes manufactured substantially from poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) resin and used for the conveyance of cold water under pressure.

The manual includes detailed information on three different types of PVC pipes: PVC-U, PVC-O and PVC-A.

This document is available on line at www.wrcplc.co.uk/Pvc

7. Water Industry Specifications

These documents have been prepared by the UK Water Industry in conjunction with WRc plc since 1984. They were developed for products that were key to Water Industry purchasing and construction, but for which no other specifications or guide existed.

  • The Water Industry Specifications (WISs) are performance specifications against which products can be tested and purchased for use in water industry applications.
  • The Information and Guidance Notes (IGNs) provide guidance on a specific subject.
